Victorian Period Fireplaces

The Victorian era saw a rapid progression for the industrial revolution as large towns and cities such as Manchester, London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Nottingham and Sheffield saw a rapid rise in industrialisation and subsequently housing as the population moved in search of work.

Row upon row of terraced houses were built and the more prosperous built grand individual houses to display their wealth.

The Victorian fireplace took pride of place in all houses, becoming the main foal point.
Terraced hoses traditionally had a beautiful Victorian fireplace in the front parlour and a Victorian cooking range in the back family room. The bedrooms were heated with traditional fireplaces.

Victorian fireplaces came in a range of sizes and styles. Early Victorian fireplaces tended to be elaborately decorated and all cast iron. Larger fireplaces would have a Victorian fire surround of marble, stone, slate or cast iron. Later in the period tiles became popular.
